The haptic game Tekamo was initially designed for the "Design for the Dark" project initiated by PhDr. Lenka Žižková, who decided to call on designers to create design for those, who are not able to see it. Although it is hard to find a commercial utilization for these products, this project was very challenging, because the quality of our work was not judged by sight, but by touch. A challenge, where at the end we are not expected to hear "it looks nice " even if they like it.
Tekamo, together with other selected works from the Design for the Dark project (products were evaluated directly by blinds) then went to exhibitions in Czech Centres around the World (Prague, New York, Berlin, Budapest, Warsaw, Bratislava).
Technical description
The haptic game Tekamo is based on the principle of pexeso game and jigsaw puzzles. Both players task is to identify a particular motif on their playing field. They predetermine these motif from the set of stones. The faster competitor gains a point. The motifs are adjusted on the playing field in the way they can be easily shuffled. Thanks to this, the game will not become boring. By simply removing the stones from the playing field and changing them, you can increase or decrease the difficulty of the game.
The playing motifs emerged on the base of researches examining tyflopictograms and tyflographic construction kits with the help of some respondents from the tyflo-centre in Brno. In the end the results showed that the game was intended for children at the age of 4 and above.
The game, thanks to its character develops the abstract way of thinking, the tactual memory and also the sensitivity to spatial orientation. By changing the playing motifs for more complicated ones, the game becomes a good training aid for older players (loss of one´s sight during his/her life).
