Jewel Box is made from a single piece of oak, of which structure is created by controlled burning in order to maintain its geometric purity. Charred surface is then reinforced with a special resin, which provides surface stability and strength, while retaining the optical properties of the raw charred wood. The cover is made of synthetic stone polished to a high gloss.
The form of the Jewel Box evolved from one of my previous works, Innerspace, where I dealt with the structure of charred wood, up to its gradual disappearance. This time I have merged this process into one functional entity, a jewel box. In order to emphasize the contrast I put completely different material and expressive characteristics into opposition - synthetic stone vs. natural material, pure white matter against fragile structured black substance.
